TEPHI Grand Rounds | How the Texas Department of State Health Services is Preparing for the World Cup

In this upcoming Grand Rounds, Varun Shetty, MD, MBA, MS, will discuss public health preparedness efforts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Texas. He will highlight how state health systems are planning to monitor and respond to priority health conditions during this large-scale international event. The session will focus on coordination across surveillance, response, and preparedness activities to address the unique challenges posed by a major influx of domestic and global visitors.

Shetty serves as chief state epidemiologist at the Texas Department of State Health Services, leading statewide disease surveillance, outbreak response, and public health preparedness efforts. He previously served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, supporting public health activities in Texas.
