Event Description
In this TEPHI Grand Rounds webinar, Sonja Swiger, PhD, will revisit the history of the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly once eradicated from the United States through an aggressive USDA-led campaign. With recent detections across Mexico and heightened concern at the border, Swiger will explain what makes the screwworm so dangerous, how eradication was originally achieved, and what’s at stake if the pest reestablishes in North America. She will also highlight the importance of ongoing surveillance and coordinated response, including recent efforts to launch a New World Screwworm Response Team to protect livestock, wildlife, and public health. Swiger is a professor in the Texas A&M University Department of Entomology and an Extension specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.
