UTHealth is committed to recruiting and retaining those who served and who are continuing to serve in the United States Military. We are committed to helping veterans transfer their unique skills and abilities in the armed forces to career opportunities at UTHealth.

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for Veteran’s Employment Preference. Protected veterans and eligible family members are given preference during the recruitment process when they designate as such on their employment application.

  • An individual currently serving in the guard or reserves
  • A recently separated veteran
  • A veteran’s surviving spouse who has not remarried
  • An orphan of a veteran (if the veteran was killed while on active duty)

UTHealth offers a Military Skills Translator tool that helps candidates translate their military experience using their Military Occupational Code (MOC) or job title to relevant positions at UTHealth.

Veteran Resource Groups

UTHealth Veteran Community Network

The goal of the Veteran Community Network is to bring together veterans and their supporters by sharing information about relevant current events and news stories, as well as upcoming networking and volunteer opportunities that support the veteran community. The network is open to all employees and students who are veterans or active service members, their spouses or dependents, and any employees or students who consider themselves to be supporters of the military.

MMSA, McGovern Medical School chapter, is committed to teaching medical students about military medicine and forming contacts between current military students and faculty to ensure military students’ success at McGovern and in their future careers.

UTHealth School of Dentistry partners with Cizik School of Nursing to provide local veterans with free dental care as part of the inaugural Give Vets a Smile program.

Rise & Shine Program

At the Rise and Shine Veteran Breakfast, UTHealth takes a moment to honor the heroes in its community, and thank them for their service.

2021 Rise & Shine Virtual Event
The Veteran Community Network, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, presented a virtual event to the UTHealth Houston community, thanking veterans, active military personnel, and military families for their service. The Rise and Shine event included the National Anthem; messages from students, faculty, and staff who have served in the military; and a keynote address by Stephanie Ingram, a UTHealth Houston employee who has dedicated her career to providing peer support to veterans and their families.

2022 Rise & Shine Virtual Event
2022 Rise & Shine Veteran Breakfast

In addition to the Rise and Shine program, UTHealth Houston created a patriotic art installation for Veterans Day. Red, white, and blue flags were placed by trainees, students, faculty, and staff members of UTHealth Houston in the courtyard of the Cooley University Life Center on Cambridge Street. Participants shared their own stories and recognized veterans with their names written on individual banners on this day of remembrance.

Wreaths Across America

Members of the UTHealth Veteran Community Network and their families participate in Wreaths Across America at the Houston National Cemetery every December, where wreaths are laid across the headstones of those who served in our armed forces.
