Agrawal to serve as national voice for medical students

Likhit Agrawal, a third-year student at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, will help shape national policy on medical education and healthcare after being elected vice chair of the American Medical Association’s Medical Student Section Governing Council.

Agrawal was elected during the section’s assembly at the American Medical Association annual meeting. As vice chair, he will serve a one-year term on the nine-member governing council that directs the Medical Student Section’s national programs, advocacy efforts, and strategic priorities.

“Healthcare policy has been a passion of mine since before medical school, so being elected to the AMA-MSS Governing Council is truly an honor,” Agrawal said. “Organized medicine has given me incredible mentors, lifelong friendships, and opportunities that have played a defining role in my growth as a future physician. I’m excited to help create those same opportunities for medical students nationwide and to continue working toward policies that empower physicians to provide the highest quality care while ensuring every patient has access to the care they deserve.”

In his role as vice chair, Agrawal will oversee the Medical Student Section’s standing committees, where many students first become involved in organized medicine and health policy. The governing council also appoints section leaders, carries out policies adopted by the Medical Student Section Assembly, and helps guide the organization’s national agenda.

“I look forward to working with my fellow Governing Council members to advance the priorities of medical students, cultivate a supportive culture within the Medical Student Section, and create meaningful opportunities for students to advocate for the causes they care about,” Agrawal said. “My goal is to help ensure every student has the resources, guidance, and confidence to become an effective advocate for both patients and physicians.”

The American Medical Association Student Section represents medical students nationwide and provides a forum for developing policy, leadership, and advocacy initiatives that are ultimately considered by the organization’s House of Delegates.
