Students from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston urged local children to be active and safe while participating in activities on wheels while handing out 130 bicycle helmets at no cost this February at a UT Physicians pediatric clinic.

UT Physicians is the clinical practice of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

During the event, families were also shown how to properly fit a child’s helmet and were given educational material on the importance of staying safe while riding a bike. Wearing a helmet can reduce a person’s risk of head injury during an accident by as much as 85%, yet not all children own one. The goal of this event was to bridge that gap and keep local children safe from harm.

The event was part of a statewide effort called Hard Hats for Little Heads, launched by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) in 1994. The event was also funded through a grant from the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a program of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which promotes compassionate, collaborative, and scientifically excellent health care.

Since its inception, TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads has given away more than 375,000 helmets to young Texans. Hard Hats for Little Heads is supported in 2023 through a grant from the TMA Foundation with major support from an anonymous TMA/TMAA member donor couple, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, the Texas Neurological Society, and gifts from physicians and their families.
