The team also built strong partnerships in El Salvador through coordinated planning, stakeholder engagement, and onsite fieldwork to support implementation and future collaboration.

Challenges in Transit Migration: Ethnographic Insights into Human Trafficking, Violence, and HIV

This project generated critical evidence on human trafficking, violence, and HIV risk among Spanish speaking migrants in transit through Mexico. Preliminary findings highlight substantial unmet needs among this group, including limited access to HIV/STI testing, safety supports, and reliable health information. The results underscore the importance of trauma-informed care, stronger safety protocols, and mobile based prevention strategies.

This project seeks to understand how extreme heat affects the health and wellbeing of sugarcane workers and their households in Eswatini by combining health records analysis with community based qualitative research. Findings are intended to inform locally driven climate adaptation strategies and lay the groundwork for future interventions to protect worker and household health as temperatures continue to rise.

Using AI to Improve Patient Outcomes in Periodontal Health

This project developed and validated an AI driven diagnostic platform that accurately analyzes dental radiographs and demonstrated strong generalizability when tested on external datasets from Kuwait. These outcomes show the platform’s potential to significantly improve early detection and clinical decision-making for periodontal disease in diverse global settings, ultimately strengthening care for populations facing a high burden of severe periodontitis.

Laparoscopic Surgery Training in Gynecology

This project successfully introduced laparoscopic gynecologic surgery at Hospital São?Lucas, enabling local surgeons to independently perform minimally invasive procedures and expand access to safer surgical care. The program also provided opportunities for our trainees to learn how to deliver in hands-on global surgery training and cross-cultural teaching.
