UTHealth Houston Core Curriculum Assessment

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) requires completion of a 42 SCH core curriculum for all undergraduate students in the state. UTHealth Houston has two undergraduate programs in Nursing and Dental Hygiene and admits students who have completed their core requirements elsewhere and enter as juniors. Each core curriculum course must include at least three or four core objectives defined by the THECB. These objectives are defined as follows:

  • Critical Thinking Skills (CT)
    • Creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information
  • Communication Skills
    • Effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral, and visual communication
  • Empirical and Quantitate Skills
    • Manipulation and analysis of numerical data or observable facts resulting in informed conclusions.
  • Teamwork
    • Ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal
  • Personal Responsibility
    • Intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage in regional, national, and global communities
  • Social Responsibility
    • Ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making
