TASFA

Application for Non-citizens who are classified as Texas residents

In 2001, Texas state legislature passed a bill (Senate Bill 1528 formerly House Bill 1403) allowing certain non-citizens classified as Texas residents, who are enrolled or will enroll in a Texas public college, the ability to apply for state aid through the TASFA application. Funds are offered based on a criteria and first-come, first-served basis due to limited fund availability. TASFA applications open on October 1st and the deadline ends on January 15th of the following calendar year (same as FAFSA).

TASFA applications are available on College for All Texans

Eligibility Requirements for TASFA:

  • Must have graduated from a Texas high school or received a GED certification in Texas
  • Have lived in Texas for three years prior to graduating from high school or receiving GED certificate
  • Have lived or will live in Texas for 12 months prior to the census date of the semester in which you enroll in college.
  • Has applied or plans to apply to become a permanent resident at the earliest opportunity
  • Submitted TASFA application prior to January 15th deadline

To apply:

  • Complete TASFA application (available on College for All Texans)
  • Submit Notarized Affidavit with a copy of state ID or other official ID (Military ID not accepted)
  • Signed copy of 1040 Tax Return or Tax Return Transcript from IRS from 2 year ago, if filed for taxes (required tax year listed on TASFA application)
    • Non-Tax filers are required to submit
      • Letter of Non-filing from IRS
      • Signed statement stating non-filing status and reason for not filing taxes
    • If male, proof of selective service
