The Chemical Safety Program is responsible for providing support to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston students, faculty, and staff concerning the recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, biological, and physical hazards. Our goal is to provide the safest work environment for all UTHealth employees and the surrounding health science center community, as well as minimizing risk to the environment and property.

The following case study is from the Texas Tech University lab accident as investigated by the Chemical Safety Board. The goal of the case study was to identify the events that led to the accident and how the academic community can learn from this tragedy. The video, presented by the CSB can be found here.

New safety training is now available through our online and classroom training courses. New for 2014, the Global Harmonized System (GHS) has been recently adopted by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.1200 (Hazard Communication Standard). The GHS is a system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labeling of chemicals. Under the GHS system, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) have now been replaced by Safety Data Sheets (SDS). SDS are available to all UTHealth personnel and can be found on CHEMWATCH or by contacting EHS at 713-500-5832.
