School of Behavioral Health Sciences Founding Dean, Jair C. Soares, MD, PhD

Message from the Dean

We have a meaningful opportunity to address one of the nation's most pressing health challenges—the critical shortage of behavioral health professionals. Insufficient staffing has led to one-third of all state behavioral health hospital beds closing, while one in five people, including children, live with a mental illness.

At UTHealth Houston School of Behavioral Health Sciences, we are answering this call and will soon begin creating a robust pipeline of diverse behavioral health care providers. With access to experts from across the university and the UTHealth Houston Behavioral Sciences Campus— the largest academic behavioral health campus in the country—we are uniquely well-suited to train the next generation of psychologists, social workers, and behavioral health professionals.

Philanthropy plays a vital role in these efforts. With your partnership, we will produce the multi-disciplinary workforce Texas urgently needs and transform behavioral health services in our state, one compassionate provider at a time.

    Bolstering the behavioral health workforce

You can write your name in our school's history from its earliest days. Your contribution to the Dean's Excellence Fund at the School of Behavioral Health Sciences will provide flexible, current-use resources to meet initial needs and address opportunities as they arise—from developing curriculum for the programs to providing scholarships to students so they can focus on their studies.

Your gift today will help send highly skilled behavioral health professionals into our communities to meet the critical health care needs of children and adults across Texas and beyond.
