COVID-19 Update

As the novel coronavirus COVID-19 continues to spread in Houston and around the world, UTHealth is taking additional steps to protect our students, employees, and community.  As of Saturday, March 14th, the REC is closed until further notice.  At this point, we do not have any answers regarding a reopening date, but see below for updated information regarding membership and program information.  For resources, meditation, yoga and other at-home workouts, check out the newly updated information under Group Fitness.

  • Members paying by EFT: We will not process any EFT’s for April or any upcoming months we may remain closed.
  • Members with regular “current” memberships: No action needed at this time.  For now we will treat these as “freeze” and apply an extension of time once we reopen.
  • UTH Students currently enrolled in classes: Our Rec Center student service fee portion is being discussed by upper management and you will receive information once decisions are finalized.
  • Locker Rentals: No action needed at this time, for now we will treat these as “freeze” and apply an extension of time once we reopen.  Also unfortunately, members are not able to access belongings stored in lockers at this time.

  • Rec Sports Program: Fees for the Softball League and Sand Volleyball will be refunded at 100% since the activity had not started before the closure.  Captains will be contacted on this process.  Once we know more about safety and large group gatherings, we will consider the possibility of adding leagues/tournaments at a later "all-clear" date, potentially this summer.
  • Wellness Program fees for Personal Training and CPR: No action needed at this time.  We will handle a possible extension and or refund once we evaluate upon reopening.  Corey has been in touch with several clients to assist them during this time as applicable and we will keep you posted.
  • Group Fitness Classes: No action needed at this time. We will handle a possible extension and or refund once we evaluate.
  • Our staff is investigating potential online resources we may be able to provide to stay active during this time.  We'll keep you posed!

We can assure you we will update you as soon as we have more details and decisions.  Finalized plans will be communicated via email and may be posted as available on our website:

We will continue to send a mass email to members/guest with current/valid emails in their membership file, update our main phone line and use campus communication resources.

You can check the university link that shows the Operational Status of each building on campus. Scroll down to Rec Center for most recent status

We sincerely hope you, your friends and family are safe and remaining healthy during this novel COVID-19 situation.  Our hearts go out to anyone impacted.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND SUPPORT!

Take Care,
Your AE/Rec Center Team
