Radiation Safety Training

UTHealth Radiation Safety Program provides training on the fundamental of Radiation Safety at least six times a year, each lasting two mornings. Periodically, Radiation Safety offers specialized instructional sessions or seminar on focused topics, including Emergency Response, Liquid Scintillation Counting, X-ray producing devices and others.

Persons performing radioactive material protocols may complete one of the following options:

A. Provide to the Radiation Safety Program a copy of a certificate or letter of completion for a course on radiation safety from another institution; or
B. Successfully complete a class and examination on radiation safety given by the Radiation Safety Program.

For questions, please contact Radiation Safety Program Danette Fennesy or call 713-500-5840.

X-ray Producing Devices

Radiation Safety Program maintains a Permit with the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation that allows researchers to have and utilize a variety of X-ray producing devices, including diagnostic x-ray tubes, bone densitometers, analytical x-ray/ diffractometers, dental x-ray, electron microscopes and others. With this Registration are specific conditions that UTHealth is responsible for satisfying, including record-keeping requirements, pre and post-installation certifications, scatter surveys and maintaining a current inventory of all devices housed at UTHealth. The University is subject to periodic inspections by various regulatory entities.

When an x-ray device is purchased and installed, the Principal Investigator or related associate, should contact the Radiation Safety Program so that proper pre-installation procedures can be followed and the device can be registered with the State.

Please contact Radiation Safety Team if you have any questions on X-ray producing devices.

Lasers

Radiation safety is responsible for all lasers housed and used in UTHealth facilities. Radiation Safety maintains a Laser Registration with the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control and maintains an inventory and safety surveillance program of these lasers.

Lasers are regulated by the Texas Bureau of Radiation Control; when a laser is purchased, leased or borrowed by researchers or personnel at UTHealth, please notify Radiation Safety for guidance, training and registration purposes.

Radiation Safety provides Fundamental Laser Training to all laser users. If you have prior training from another facility, please provide documentation of that training to our office. Otherwise, please contact Radiation Safety Team for further information related to laser use.
